SYNTAX PRACTICE
(1) Quantified Nouns
In Chinese, nouns are often preceded by a measure word to emphasize what kind of object they are.
NU+M +N 一個人/東西 a person/thing 兩位先生/太太/小姐 two gentleman/ married women/misses 三本書 three books 四枝筆 four pen 五杯咖啡 five cup of coffee 十份報 ten newspaper 幾輛汽車 several automobile how many automobile
(2) Sums of Money
In Chinese, when money is being discussed, the last monetary unit is often left out. In today's world, the currencies of many countries ( including US and those in Europe) include smaller monetary units such as dimes(毛) and cents (分).

(3) Specified and Numbered Nouns
When the singular noun follows a DEM, the ordinal number一 is usually omitted and only 這/那/哪+ the measure word is needed.
I. DEM+ -M+N
1.這個東西很貴嗎? 這個東西不太貴。 2. 那位小姐要買什麼? 她要買書。 3. 你喜歡哪輛車子? 我喜歡這輛。 II. DEM+NU+-M+N 這(一)個人 this pen 那兩本書 those two book 哪三枝筆 which three pen 1. 這三本書一共多少錢? 一共二十四塊錢。 2. 這兩枝筆,你要哪(一)枝? 我要這枝。 3. 那三位小姐都是英國人嗎? 不,兩位是英國人,一位是美國人。 4. 哪幾輛汽車是日本車? 那(一)輛汽車是日本車。
(4) Price per Unit
When asking or giving price, age, time etc. Verb equivalents such as “to be” are usually left out.
I. NU-M+ (N)+NU-+M+錢 ?
(N),+NU-M+ (N)+NU-+M+錢 。
II. (N),+NU+-M+錢+NU-+M。
1. 一份報幾塊錢? 一份報十塊錢。 2. 書,一本多少錢? 一本九十塊錢。 3. 一個漢堡,多少錢一個? 三十五塊錢。 (5) sentence with direct object and indirect object.

1. 你給他錢嗎? 我不給他錢。 2. 誰給他錢? 王先生給他錢。 3. 你要給誰這本書? 我要給李小姐這本書。 4. 那個人給 你什麼? 他給我一本中文書。 5. 他給你多少錢? 他給我十塊錢。

NOTES
1) Using question words 幾 and 多少:
幾 (how many /how much) is always used together with a measure or and is usually used when the amount is less than ten. 多少 (how many/how much) is usually used when the amount is assumed to be ten or more (with no upper limit), and the measure word can be omitted. e.g.
2) when 多 is used as a modifier, it is usually used together with the adverb such as 很,太etc.
e.g.
3) comparison of 二 and 兩 :
二 is usually translated as “two” and can be used alone. In counting, numbers with two or more digits that end with the number 2 use the characters二,not 兩, such as十二,二十二。 兩 is a bound from, i.e., it can never buy used alone but rather must always be followed by measure word. e.g.

5) Uses of measure word 位and個:
6) Tone on一yī:The numeral一yī(one) when use cardinal in counting has the high, level tone. When followed by a measure, however it behaves exactly like a negative particle 不bù (see lesson 1, Note 5). Hence 一個yīge (個— ge is being intrinsically a falling tone) but 一本 yiběn. This change is most evident when the number is stressed.
7) 那(nà) sometimes read as 那(nèi), 那(nà) means “that” 那(nèi) means “that one” . When 那(nà) combined with “one” [一(yī)] we pronounce it as 那 (nèi). nà+yī=nèi
8) In Taiwan, the smallest monetary unit used in everyday life is the dollar or 塊/元 (yuán), but postage stamps may have value including units of one tenth of a dollor or 毛, while stocks may have values including cent or 分
