Importance of Muktinath Temple between Hindu and Buddhist
Muktinath temple holds significant importance for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims as well as trekkers. For Hindus, the temple is considered a sacred place of salvation where devotees can attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The temple is believed to be one of the Divya Desams, holy abodes of Vishnu, and is highly revered by followers of Vishnu and his avatars.
For Buddhists, Muktinath is a revered pilgrimage site associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and is believed to be a place where one can receive spiritual blessings. The temple is known as Chumig Gyatsa in Tibetan Buddhism and holds significance for those seeking purification and spiritual enlightenment.
The temple is also famous for its 108 icy water sprouts, symbolizing the 108 sacred water spouts mentioned in Hindu scriptures. Pilgrims often take showers under these sprouts as part of a ritual known as "108 Taps" to purify themselves spiritually.
In addition to its spiritual importance, Muktinath temple is a popular destination for trekkers as it is located on the Annapurna Circuit trek, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas and a unique cultural experience.
During the festival of Dashain, which is one of the most important and widely celebrated Hindu festivals, Muktinath temple sees an influx of pilgrims and devotees. The festival usually falls in the month of September or October and involves various rituals, prayers, and offerings to the deities for blessings and prosperity. Pilgrims often visit the temple during this auspicious time to seek blessings and participate in the festive celebrations.
