Which is the best Chinese offline dictionary?
Xīnhuá Zìdiǎn 新華字典, China’s single most authoritative character dictionary. 11th edition (large print version 大字本 is great for complex, multistroke characters): 13,000 characters and 3300 words.
Over 300,000,000 copies printed since 1953 (maybe four or five hundred million by now: need to check). I used to have a first edition, bound in blue plastic: one of my treasures, lost forever
I like Line, but I usually use it online. I have the app from the google play store. It definitely has a downloadable offline component.
If you'd like to explore a single character in more depth you might like to try http://zdic.net. Don't be intimidated by the Chinese format. Just input the character in question and tap 查 (find). My browser even gave me the option to translate the page to English. This might be very useful the first time you use it. You will be richly rewarded with a plethora of Chinese dictionaries including the ancient etymological dictionary 说文解字 and the famous 康熙字典 along with more modern dictionaries.
