Nepal is one of those countries, where once you visited it, you will long to see it again. I have visited Nepal in winter 2014 and I had been planning to return there. My return was no realized until winter 2017, when I set out on the EBC trek. Frankly, the first thing that came to mind when I planned the EBC trekking trip was not a guide. Being an experienced trekker, and this being my second visit to Nepal, I know it is possible to do the trip without a guide but a more meticulous planning would be required. Furthermore, I did not exactly have a good experience with trekking company the first time I was here. However, I relented on hiring a guide because my partner did not have as much high altitude trekking experience and we were doing it during off-season in winter. Also, being my second visit, I know that getting a guide means that the local people gets to work. Hence, I reached out to Bhakti whom I have known by name since 2014 when I was looking for a guide for the ACT. However, unfortunately, he was already fully booked then and I ended up finding a guide through a big trekking agency. But this time around, I managed to grab hold of him. In terms of the costs, when I contacted him, he immediately provided me the cost with the breakdowns. Although it was not the lowest on the street, it was a fair deal. Furthermore, understanding that he is an independent guide and literally a one-man trekking agency, it is hard for him to achieve the economies of scale to provide the lowest price. Hence, I agreed to his price as I know, unlike the big agencies, most independent guides love their jobs and have the incentives to make their clients happy. Evidently, he was no exception. He is an extremely caring and responsible guide. For instance, upon arrival in Kathmandu Airport, we met up with Bhakti and he was concerned that we were under equipped because our duffle bag was too small and light (less than 15kg for 2 people for more than 2 weeks!). He was concerned despite of my assurances that we were well equipped. On the day of our flight to Lukla, unfortunately, our flight got cancelled due to weather conditions. He immediately sprang into action and secured us the flight tickets for the very next day. As a trekker, I totally understood that plans are ever changing but Bhakti insisted to go through the amendments with us to make sure we are happy with the changes. Also, he treats his porters fairly and has a knack for hiring good porters. From the onset, he informed me that there will be one porter for two people and the weight will be limited to 20kg. On the trek, we saw some porters (hired by other agencies / guides) carrying baggage for more than two clients and the baggage easily weighed more than 35kgs. Even though, there were guidelines on how much a porter can carry, they were rarely followed or enforced by many trekking companies. Our porter, Nir, carried a much more reasonable load for us. Also, he was extremely agile and helpful throughout the trek. Both Nir and Bhakti assisted us significantly when we negotiated our way through the icy and slippery Cho La Pass. Client experience is important to him and he can understand the wants and needs of his clients. He took measures to ensure that his clients stay healthy during the trek. He constantly reminded us to increase our water intake such that we don’t suffer from altitude sickness. Also, he carried 5-7kg of apples and pomegranates and those were served after dinner to ensure we have good bowel movements during the trek. Knowing that we were reasonably good trekkers and that I enjoyed taking photographs, we actually hiked longer on the day we get to the EBC. We went from Lobuche to Gorak Shep to EBC and straight up to Kala Pathar. While most clients do not do Kala Pathar in the same day as EBC, the sunset view of Nuptse and Everest from Kala Pathar was amazing. Despite of the cold (-10 degrees celcius) up in Kala Pathar, we managed to get wonderful pictures of the mountains. Furthermore, he recommended up to make our way through Renjo La pass as well, even though it meant we have to trek 6-7 hours for two consecutive days. The extra hard work was worth it when we were rewarded with the beautiful sceneries of the valley (en route to Lumde) and we were away from the crowds that have their minds on EBC only. Perhaps the most amazing trick that he can pull out of his hat was delaying a flight! On our last day on trek, we hiked from Namche to Lukla. Initially, we were supposed to spend a night in Lukla and catch the flight the next morning. However, as we were still 30 minutes away from Lukla, we saw a plane flew and landed at the Lukla airport. He made a call to the airport to check whether it was our flight. Indeed, it was! He told the airport staff over the call to hold the plane and wait for us to get there. Indeed, when we got to the airport, the other passengers were just already queueing at the door of the plane (Sorry guys!). Our stuff was checked in so quickly (and honestly, I have not seen such efficiency anywhere!) and we were shoved into the plane. Despite the hasty goodbyes with Nir, we were all glad that we would be in Kathmandu in an hour’s time. There were countless memorable moments during our trek with Bhakti and I will not list of them in this lengthy review. Based on my experience, I see a guide who is passionate and loves his job dearly. In return, as a client, you will have a wonderful experience trekking in the Himalayas. I highly recommend engaging him as a trekking guide as I know that the next time I plan to go back to Nepal, he will be the first person I call up!
